Kindu – Héritier is 42 years old and an analyst by profession and father of four, lives in Kindu, Maniema province. Like many people living with diabetes in this part of central-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, he faces limited access to care due to the province’s isolation and persistent tensions in the East. "There were times I thought my diabetes would eventually take me. Every day, I just try to hold on, even when it becomes difficult to manage my illness," he confides.

Kinshasa—The Democratic Republic of the Congo has declared the end of its latest Ebola outbreak, thanks in part to the trusted infrastructure and expertise of the national polio eradication programme. 

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing health challenges of our time. It threatens the effectiveness of treatments, increases healthcare costs, and endangers millions of lives.

We spoke with Dr Aurélie Mambu Nsimba, pharmacist and Head of the Regulatory Quality Assurance Office at the Congolese Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority, to understand the issues and solutions.

Bulape—Twenty-five-year-old Héritier Bope Mpona recalls with sadness the impact of Ebola on his life. He lost his daughter, wife and mother to the disease which affected his community of Bulape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Kasai Province. “I came out alive, but I came out alone,” he says.

The outbreak was declared over on 1 December 2025, around three months after it was confirmed. Intense efforts to control and end the outbreak helped save lives, including Mpona’s.

Bulape — Ebola virus disease is a serious illness. When detected late, it claims many lives, even with recent advances in vaccines and therapeutics. Although the disease has become more manageable with improved care and as response capacities, it still takes a heavy toll on families and communities.
